With the goal of fostering the growth of Black competitive surfers and inspiring the Black community to feel welcome in the water, A Great Day in the Stoke welcomes people from all backgrounds and abilities to participate in its second gathering, Sept. 16 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Huntington Beach Pier.
The free event features surfing competitions as well as complimentary surf lessons, beachside yoga, entertainment, vendors, a raffle, and surfboard demonstrations. Yeti water bottles and product samples from Black Girl Sunscreen will also be given out to attendees.
“I loved the excitement everyone had to participate and attend (last year),” says event founder Nathan Fluellen. “I’m looking forward to the increase in women competing. We had six ladies compete last year, and now we have 19 ladies across our shortboard, longboard, groms, and beginner divisions.”
